This problem was composed by Queckenstadt in 1910. Yes, I know... Their names are
even more difficult to pronounce than their compositions.
The central theme in this problem is the control over the a1-h8 diagonal, or more precisely: control over the squares g7 and h8. Note that 1.d3 Ka5 2.h5 f5 3.h6 gxh6 4.Bxh6 Kxa4 5.g7 fails to 5... Bxg7 6.Bxg7 Kb3. Black will now capture all white pawns... Correct here is: 1.h5! f5 2.e5! Bxe5 3.d4! Bf6 (3... Bxd4 4.h6 gxh6 5.Be3) 4.Bf4 c5 5.h6 gxh6 6.Be5 wins... |
