This position stems from the rapid game between Ljubojevic and Van Wely, played
in Monaco this year. White has the better position thanks to the open h file, the somewhat weakened
pawn structure on black's king side and his better positioned pieces, but how to cash in on that?
Ljubo found the perfect combination...
1.e5! (the obvious 1.Qxd6 leads white to a pretty bad looking endgame because of the poorly placed Knight on h6 (among others) after: 1... Qxd6 2.Rxd6 Rad8 3.Rxd8 Rxd8 4.f4 Nf3 5.Rf1 Rd3 6.Rh1) 1... Rxe5 2.f4 Ne4 3.Qe3 Nxc3 4.fxe5 Nxd1 5.exf6+ Kf8 6.Rxd1 white has a much better position then after the line starting with Qxd6. The game continued: 6... c5 7.Qf4 Rd8 8.Re1 Nb4 9.Qd2 Qa4 10.a3 Na2+ 11.Kb1 Qxc4 12.Qe3 1-0. |
